My drawing depicts two Washoe County, Nevada deputy sheriffs assigned to traffic duties in 1925 and 1930 respectively. This was in the days of dirt roadways and bootleggers to be chased.
I had the pleasure of interviewing the man in back, William "Bill" Kelly, at the age of ninety regarding his career and riding his Excelsior Henderson motorcycle. He told me of the time he was chasing a bootlegger down a dirt roadway and hit a dust bowl, crashing the motorcycle. He flagged down a passerby and loaded the bike for the ride back to his office. The bike was totaled. Bill passed away only a few years after that visit. I cherish that opportunity to meet with him. The front rider was Charles Rhigini in about 1930. I was not lucky enough to meet him.
